Library Research 101

  • This workshop offers students an introductory overview of the scholarly research process. Learn to distinguish popular and academic sources, when to use different types of sources, and the best places to look for those sources using library resources. If you find yourself struggling to find a scholarly journal article on a topic you’ve chosen, or don’t know where to look in the library for the book you’ve found, this is the workshop for you. Learn to develop your research question and search terms, avoid paywalls, and some handy tricks for delving into the scholarly research process.

Reading, Evaluating & Citing Your Sources

  • Once you have found a list of sources relevant to your research topic, how do you decide which ones are the most appropriate for your project? When you encounter contradictory information, how do you negotiate meaning and decide how to present the competing perspectives in your paper? In this workshop, you will learn strategies for reading, thinking critically about, and citing your sources. You will learn different types of citation and how to best employ them. Join us and learn more about why citing your sources matters and how to get it right.

Document Management for Thesis Preparation 

  • Citations and referencing giving you headaches? Zotero may be the best tool to help you in your honours thesis research and preparation. Zotero will help you save and organize your references while you're searching and will format citations and reference lists in hundreds of different citation styles. In this workshop we will show you how to set up your free account and get started with Zotero.

APA Citation Style & Beyond

  • APA is one of the most widely used citation styles for social sciences. Learn how to format, cite and write following APA style guidelines. Learn what additional resources are available to help you at the library.

MLA Citation Style & Beyond

  • MLA is one of the most widely used citation styles for the humanities. Learn how to cite in MLA style and see what resources are available to help you.

Chicago Citation Style & Beyond

  • Chicago Citation style is commonly used in both the humanities and in social sciences. In this workshop, you will learn to differentiate between the two varieties of Chicago citation style most used: 1) Notes and Bibliography 2) Authour-Date. Learn to cite in Chicago Style, and about the resources available to you at the library. Please Note: The newest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style was published in September 2024. This workshop will present the differences between the 17th and 18th editions, but focus mainly on the latest edition. 

Beyond the Headlines: A workshop on recognizing Fake News and disinformation Online

  • As disinformation becomes increasingly common, finding reliable information on the open internet is a skill in itself. At the same time, everyone has a responsibility to develop critical thinking skills and to avoid spreading unreliable information. This interactive workshop presents the current state of fake news and introduces you to the most effective search strategies to help you place information within the context of its creation, helping you to get at the truth of the matter and develop your skills as a researcher.

Empowering Action: Climate Literacy for Effective Change

  • The climate crisis affects everyone on Earth. This presentation has a general audience in mind, and will approach the climate crisis from a socio-political point of view. Learn to locate and interpret climate data for informed decision-making practices and preparation. Strategize the most effective ways to inspire others towards positive change and meaningful action. 

Knowledge Justice: Strategies for More Inclusive Research

  • This workshop is designed to help you apply a critical lens to your research practices. Consider diverse forms of knowledge creation and recognize historical value assignments to such knowledge, according to context. Engage in critical reflection of information privilege as way to advocate for social and cognitive justice. Learn to strategically seek out multiple voices and expand your worldview.
