AI Academic Search Engines for Literature Reviews

AI Academic Search Engines for Literature Reviews Online

The webinar is for upper year undergraduates (year 3 and 4 only) who are doing research or graduate students who want to learn more about these tools. This session will cover retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools such as Elicit, Consensus, and Undermind.ai, as well as Web of Science's new Smart Search function. It will focus on how these tools work and how to critically evaluate them for citation faithfulness and authenticity.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain similarities and differences between types of AI products marketed for researchers (e.g., LLM chatbots, AI search engines, academic AI tools)
  2. Compare the outputs of AI academic search engines with traditional databases to determine their value and validity
  3. Critically evaluate the summaries provided by academic AI tools
  4. Describe some ethical and environmental considerations of the use of AI products in general
  5. Practice searching in AI academic search engines, including Web of Science's Smart Search and online tools (Undermind.ai, Elicit.com & Consensus)
